Land Acknowledgement
Indigenous Peoples have unique and enduring relationships with the land. Indigenous Peoples have lived on and cared for this land throughout the ages.
We acknowledge this and we recognize the significance of the land on which we gather and call home. We acknowledge the traditional Territory of the Huron-Wendat and Haudenosaunee peoples, and the Anishinabek of the Williams Treaties. This land is part of the Treaty Lands and Territory of the Mississauga’s of the Credit First Nation.
We honour and respect Indigenous heritage and the long-lasting history of the land and strive to protect the land, water, plants and animals that have inhabited this land for the generations yet to come.
Caledon today occupies an area of almost 380 square kilometers with a population of over 76,500. Though it is a developing urban area, it remains primarily rural. It is an amalgamation of many communities and villages, an amalgamation that adds to the rich, unique and varied heritage that Caledon boasts.
In order to share this knowledge with all the people in Caledon, and to encourage respect for our history and cultural heritage, Caledon Heritage Foundation (CHF) was formed in 2006 and incorporated as a not-for-profit organization.
Charitable status was obtained in 2011.
CHF works with our heritage partners in Caledon to promote and support heritage activity in the Town of Caledon.
Our cultural heritage reflects what our Caledon community was, and what it is now. It tells the stories of the people of Caledon, what they did 500, or even 5 years ago.
Conservation – Preservation – Restoration – Adaptive Re-use …………… These activities all share a common value, RESPECT……….respect for that which went before, and how we manage it in the future.
This respect applies to the tangible – how we look after our bricks and mortar ……and the non-tangible – how we embrace our cultural heritage.
